Application of thin-wall bearings in industrial robots

In recent years, with the advancement of manufacturing technology, the demand for various types of robots using modern manufacturing technologies has been increasing. These include automated production lines for large-scale construction machinery, automobiles, and home appliances, as well as deep-sea manned submersibles, humanoid robots, and industrial robots for painting, arc welding, spot welding, assembly, and handling, all of which are crucial for enhancing the nation's high-tech strategic position. Specialized bearings, which are key components of these robots, significantly impact key performance indicators such as operational smoothness, repeatability, motion accuracy, and operational reliability.

 

Currently, a wide variety of bearings are used in industrial robots, including thin-walled deep groove ball bearings, thin-walled angular contact ball bearings, thin-walled four-point contact ball bearings, and thin-walled crossed roller bearings. Due to their strong combined load capacity, high precision, low friction torque, light weight, and smooth operation, thin-walled four-point contact ball bearings and cross-roller bearings are primarily used in the waist, elbow, and wrist areas of industrial robots.

 

1. Thin-walled Four-Point Contact Ball Bearing Structures

 

Thin-walled four-point contact ball bearings specifically designed for industrial robots are typically available with or without seals. They primarily consist of an inner ring, an outer ring, a retainer, and steel balls or non-contact seals. Both the inner and outer rings are integrally constructed, with the steel balls forming four-point contact with the inner and outer ring grooves. The retainer is a crown-shaped insert. They are suitable for installation in joints such as wrists and elbows on industrial robots.

 

II. Features of Thin-Walled Sealed Four-Point Contact Ball Bearings

 

1. The outer diameter to inner diameter ratio is small, resulting in a large number of rolling elements with small diameters. Compared to standard bearings with the same inner diameter, their weight is approximately 5% of that of standard bearings, and their cross-sectional area is approximately 20% of that of standard bearings.

 

2. Fixed-Section Bearings: Thin-Walled Four-Point Contact Ball Bearings have a uniform cross-sectional dimension that does not change with changes in the inner or outer diameter.

 

3. They can withstand radial loads, bidirectional thrust loads, and overturning moments, equivalent to two sets of angular contact ball bearings mounted back-to-back, yet their width is only the width of one set.

 

Since the introduction of robots into the industrial field in the 1960s, both the number of robots and their technology have developed rapidly. As specialized bearings for key robotic components, international bearing companies such as Japan's IKO, THK, and NSK, and the United States' Koydon, developed a series of specialized bearings for various robotic parts in the 1980s. These bearings provide approximately 80% of the basic components needed by the robotics industry, laying a solid foundation for the rapid development of industrial robots.

 

Most domestic bearings for industrial robots are imported. While a few manufacturers do manufacture these bearings, these products are limited in quantity, with limited variety and specifications, low component standardization, long lead times, high costs, and inconsistent quality. These factors severely hinder the healthy development of the domestic industrial robotics industry.
